Gen. Ambrose E. Burnside and staff at the army’s encampment at Warrenton.

On the morning of May 3 Lee and Major General J. E. B. Stuart, who had taken command of Jackson’s corps, renewed the Confederate attack on the Union salient, supported by massed artillery. The intense fighting lasted throughout the morning and in the absence of any news of Sedgwick at Fredericksburg Hooker ordered the Union troops to pull back towards the Rappahannock the afternoon. Sedgwick’s orders had in fact been confused and he had only crossed the river into Fredericksburg late on May 2, launching his assault on Early’s troops at 10:30 on May 3. He soon took Marye’s Heights and was on his way toward Chancellorsville but as the fighting there had died down, Lee was able to detach a division to stop Sedgwick at the Battle of Salem Church on May 4, forcing him back across the Rappahannock. The next night Hooker also took his army back across the river. Overall, the Union had suffered almost 17,000 casualties compared to near 13,000 Confederate casualties and were no nearer defeating Lee or threatening Richmond. Yet the Confederate victory had come at cost, for Lee had lost his right-hand man, “Stonewall” Jackson.
